Blue Smoothie Container

This bright smoothie dish is made with spirulina powder blue, frozen bananas, cauliflower and Greek yogurt. It is thick, creamy and refreshing!

I brought you another thick bowl and smoothie cream today! This one is rich in nutrients and has a beautiful blue color due to the spirulina powder blue (also known as the blue majik powder).

This blue smoothie bowl is packed with 35 grams of protein for making a healthy breakfast or snack after workout.

Spirulina 101

Spirulina is a powder found in blue algae. The powder can be green or blue (as used in this recipe). Raw spirulina powder is derived from chlorophyll and raw spirulina powder is derived from the algae phycocyanin.

It is a powerful energy food that not only adds blue color to the diet, but is also considered one of the world's most nutritious foods. Here are some of the amazing health benefits of spirulina (source):

One tablespoon contains about 4 grams of protein and contains a good amount of vitamins and minerals including potassium, calcium, magnesium, B vitamins and iron.

  • Strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
  • It can help strengthen the immune system
  • It has anti-cancer properties
  • It can help increase strength
  • It can help control blood sugar levels
  • High levels of beta-carotene can help improve digestion

Ingredients Needed

frozen bananas - frozen bananas help to thicken the smoothie and add a little sweetness. Check out my post on how to freeze bananas for tips and tricks!

Frozen cauliflower - frozen cauliflower helps to make a thick smoothie dish with extra cream. And it does this without making your smoothie as sweet as cauliflower or adding a ton of sugar. Frozen cauliflower or frozen cauliflower flowers will work here, but I prefer to use licensed cauliflower because it blends easily and quickly. Many grocery stores now have licensed cauliflower in the refrigerator section but you can easily make your own cauliflower rice and freeze it again.

Greek yogurt - adds a lot of protein to this smoothie. I used Greek yoghurt with full fat, but any type of yogurt will work. Just remember spicy yoghurt because it tends to have a lot of extra sugar.

protein powder - I recommend vanilla protein powder. Plant-based protein powder my favorite is Nuzest. Use the bird feed code with a 15% discount on your order!

spirulina raw powder - also known as blue majik. Raw spirulina powder has a neutral taste than raw spirulina (no fish flavor), so you can get all the health benefits without the algae taste. I used this Terrasoul blue spirulina powder.

vanilla extract - add a hint of vanilla flavor to a bowl of smoothie.

almond milk - I have used almond milk without sugar but coconut milk, oat milk or non-dairy milk or milk will work here. Here's how to make homemade almond milk.

toppings - feel free to make art here, but the items I will include are: kiwi, green berries, black berries, coconut chips, granola and black berries.

How to Make a Vessel With Blue Smoothie

  • I love smoothies because they come together quickly! And this smoothie dish is no different.
  • Put almond milk in your blender followed by banana, cauliflower, protein powder, spirulina raw powder and vanilla.
  • Stir until smooth, using a blender's tamper to move the frozen bananas and cauliflower until completely processed without any remaining pieces.
  • Add extra almond milk a little at a time, if necessary until you reach the desired thickness.
  • Sprinkle or pour your smoothie into a bowl, top with the toppings you want and enjoy!
  • How easy is that ?!

Top ideas

Okay, this is the fun part and the options do not end here! Make art with your smoothie dishes. Here are some of the toppings I go to:

bananas - banana slices are the best smoothie bowl topping if you like bananas.

kiwi - kiwi is the best addition to this dish. Use pieces or charm and make a kiwi flower.

berries - I like to use a combination of fresh berries and berries to keep the theme blue, but strawberries and / or raspberries can also be delicious.

granola - do you want to add some texture to your smoothie bowl? Add crunchy granola to the top! Try my hemp granola or this almond coconut granola. I also love Purely Elizabeth granola if you need a shopping option.

chia seeds - add healthy fats, fiber and texture with chia seeds. Flax seeds, pumpkin seeds or hemp seeds can be a good substitute.

coconut flakes - I like to add coconut flakes or fried coconuts for extra flavor and crunch!

nuts - walnuts, cashews, pecans or almonds can be an excellent digestive option.

peanut butter - I like to add a drizzle of almond butter or cashew butter to this smoothie bowl!

sweetener - I find this smoothie dish tasty enough, but if necessary you can add honey, maple syrup or monk fruit to make things delicious!
